  • Furano Golf Course in Hokkaido

    Hi, this is GOLyome.

This time, I played at Furano Golf Course in Hokkaido.

Surrounded by the wide-open nature of Furano, this is the kind of course that really feels like resort golf in Hokkaido. Furano Golf Course has 36 holes, and we played the Palmer Course.

From the forward tees, I found the distance quite comfortable for women. But once I reached the greens, things became much more difficult.

    Furano Golf Course in Hokkaido

Furano Golf Course – Quick Information

    Location Yahataoka, Furano, Hokkaido, Japan
Access from Tokyo Fly from Tokyo to Asahikawa Airport, then drive about 1 hour by rental car. From Asahikawa Station, allow about 1 hour 15 minutes.
Public Transportation We traveled by rental car, so we did not use public transportation for this visit. A rental car is the most practical option for this itinerary.
Booking Our tee time was arranged by another member of our group, so we did not personally use an online booking site. Public booking is available through golf reservation services such as GDO.
Green Fee ¥11,500 (about US$72) on weekends and holidays during our visit. Meals were not included. USD conversion: US$1 = ¥160.
Rental Clubs & Shoes Not confirmed during our visit. If you need rental equipment, check availability directly with the golf course before booking.
Dress Code Relaxed compared with many traditional Japanese golf clubs. We arrived in golf wear and did not feel that a jacket or formal arrival outfit was necessary.
Tattoo Policy We did not confirm the golf course bath or shower tattoo policy during this visit. If you have tattoos and plan to use bathing facilities, check with the facility in advance.
Membership & Visitor Policy Visitors can play the course. Special local-resident membership plans and rates may also be available.

Getting There: About 1 Hour from Asahikawa Airport

We traveled to Furano Golf Course by rental car. It takes about 1 hour from Asahikawa Airport and around 1 hour 15 minutes from Asahikawa Station.

This makes Furano surprisingly realistic even if you are starting your trip in Tokyo. If you take an early-morning flight from Tokyo to Asahikawa, rent a car at the airport, and drive directly to the course, an afternoon through-play round can be possible.

This is one of the big differences between golf in Hokkaido and golf around Tokyo. Through-play is common in Hokkaido, so you can sometimes fit golf into a travel day much more easily.

The nearest expressway interchange is Takikawa IC, but the course is still about 68 km away. For visitors arriving by air, renting a car at Asahikawa Airport is the most straightforward option.

Route from Asahikawa Airport to Furano Golf Course

    A Mountain-Lodge-Style Clubhouse

The clubhouse uses plenty of wood and has a warm mountain-lodge atmosphere.

It feels very different from some of the more formal golf clubs around Tokyo. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere tells you that this is resort golf in Hokkaido.

The dress code also felt relaxed. We arrived wearing our golf clothes, and there was none of the formal jacket-and-trousers atmosphere that international visitors may associate with some private Japanese golf clubs.

    Clubhouse at Furano Golf Course

    We Played the Palmer Course

Furano Golf Course has 36 holes, and our round was on the Palmer Course.

From GOLyome’s point of view, the forward tees made the course very manageable for women. Before playing, I imagined that a large Hokkaido course might feel extremely long, but the distance was comfortable from the women’s tees.

That does not mean the course is easy, though. The real challenge begins when you reach the greens.

Palmer Course at Furano Golf Course

The Greens Are the Real Challenge

The most difficult part of the Palmer Course for me was the greens.

There is plenty of undulation, and where your ball finishes on the green can make a huge difference. It is easy to imagine a comfortable approach turning into a three-putt if you leave the ball in the wrong position.

So while the distance from the forward tees can be friendly for women and newer golfers, the putting is much more demanding. That contrast is one of the things that makes the course interesting.

No Traditional OB, but Watch the Bushes

Another feature that stood out was the thick bush area along both sides of the course.

Instead of traditional out-of-bounds areas, balls entering the bushes can result in a one-stroke penalty. The other problem is simply finding your ball — once it disappears into the vegetation, it can be very difficult to locate.

For beginners, this changes the strategy. Do not assume that you can hit aggressively simply because you do not see conventional OB stakes. Keeping the ball in the fairway is much more valuable than chasing extra distance.

Drive the Cart onto the Fairway

When course conditions allow, golf carts can be driven onto the fairway.

For us, this added to the Hokkaido resort-golf experience. Instead of constantly walking back and forth from cart paths, you can move through the wide course more comfortably.

It is also helpful if you are visiting Hokkaido as part of a longer trip and want to enjoy golf without turning the round into an exhausting day.

Try the Soup Curry for Lunch

For lunch at the clubhouse restaurant, I had one of Hokkaido’s signature dishes: soup curry.

It came with plenty of vegetables and was just right between golf sessions. It became one of the memorable parts of the day, not just something to eat between holes.

If you travel all the way to Furano for golf, it is nice to enjoy something that feels distinctly Hokkaido at the same time.

Lunch was not included in our green fee, but I would happily order the soup curry again.

Soup curry at Furano Golf Course

Check Different Booking Plans Before You Play

The weekend and holiday green fee we confirmed was ¥11,500 (about US$72), with meals charged separately.

Depending on the date and booking plan, lower rates may be available through golf reservation sites such as GDO. There are also special plans aimed at Hokkaido residents.

Our own reservation was arranged by another member of our group, so GOLyome did not personally book this round through an online service. If you are booking from overseas, compare the available plans before choosing a tee time.

Spring Golf in Furano Can Be Very Cold

The golf season in Hokkaido is much shorter than it is around Tokyo. Early spring can still feel like winter.

Around mid-April, temperatures can be as low as 2°C (36°F). If you arrive expecting the same spring weather you would find in Tokyo, you may be surprised.

For early- or late-season golf, bring a windbreaker and warm base layers. Checking the Furano weather forecast immediately before your trip is especially important.

    GOLyome’s Verdict

Furano Golf Course gives you exactly the kind of open, relaxed resort-golf experience many people imagine when they think about playing golf in Hokkaido.

The Palmer Course was comfortable in distance from the forward tees, and being able to drive the cart onto the course made the round even more enjoyable. At the same time, the undulating greens and thick bushes on both sides mean that the course still demands accurate golf.

Add the wooden mountain-lodge-style clubhouse and a bowl of Hokkaido soup curry, and the experience feels very different from a typical round around Tokyo.

With Furano Golf Course about an hour by car from Asahikawa Airport, it is even possible to fly from Tokyo in the morning and play an afternoon round. If you are planning a Hokkaido trip and want to include golf, Furano Golf Course is well worth considering.

  • Costco Golf Ball in 2018

    Costco Golf Ball in 2018

    Gear Review
A Costco Golf Ball Bargain? My Callaway Superhot 55 Discovery
Costco Find ★ Originally Purchased in 2018 Golf Ball Review
Where do you buy your golf balls?
Back in 2018, I usually bought mine online, using whatever shopping points I had accumulated to get a better deal. At the time, I was mainly playing Srixon balls that cost around ¥2,000 (about US$13) per dozen.
Then, during a trip to Costco with my wife, I spotted something interesting:
Callaway Superhot 55 — two dozen for ¥3,680 (about US$23).
That worked out to only ¥1,840 (about US$12) per dozen.

The price caught my attention. But what really made me stop was something printed on the package:
    3-PIECE.

    Gear at a Glance

    Product Callaway Superhot 55
    Category Golf Ball
Where We Bought It Costco Japan
    When We Bought It 2018
What We Paid ¥3,680 (approx. US$23) for 24 balls / two dozen
Price Per Dozen ¥1,840 (approx. US$12)
    Construction 3-piece
    Compression 55
What Caught My Attention A 3-piece Callaway ball at a price lower than the 2-piece balls I had normally been buying.
Wait — A 3-Piece Ball at This Price?

Until then, the balls I had been using were Srixon 2-piece models costing around ¥2,000 (about US$13) per dozen.

The Callaway Superhot 55 at Costco was ¥3,680 (about US$23) for two dozen.

That alone seemed like a good deal.

Then I noticed the package said it was a 3-piece golf ball.

    Really?

A Callaway 3-piece ball for only ¥1,840 per dozen?

That was enough to put the box in our Costco cart.

Callaway Superhot 55 golf balls purchased at Costco
Superhot or Supersoft? I Had to Find Out

As soon as we got home from Costco, I opened my computer.

I wanted to know whether I had actually found a bargain.

Part of the confusion came from the name. Callaway already had the well-known Supersoft ball, while the box sitting in front of me said Superhot 55.

    Supersoft. Superhot.

Similar names, but they were not the same golf ball.

The packaging was also covered in English, which made me suspect that this was a product intended primarily for an overseas market rather than the regular Japanese lineup.

So I changed my search from Japanese to English.

English packaging of Callaway Superhot 55 golf balls
The English Search Gave Me the Answer

Eventually I found information from the U.S. golf market confirming what was printed on the box.

The Superhot 55 really was a 3-piece golf ball with 55 compression.

It was designed to retain the soft feel associated with lower-compression Callaway balls while adding an extra mantle layer to provide more shot-making performance and more spin around the greens than the Supersoft.

At the time, the Superhot 55 had a U.S. retail price of around US$28 per dozen.

That made our Costco purchase of two dozen for only ¥3,680 (about US$23 total) look even better.

Sometimes the most interesting golf gear isn’t what you planned to buy — it’s what you unexpectedly find at Costco.
Was It the Same as Japan’s E・R・C Ball?

This was where my original 2018 investigation got especially interesting.

At the time, Callaway’s Japanese E・R・C ball was also a 3-piece design and used what Callaway called a High Velocity Core.

Seeing similar terminology on the Superhot packaging made me wonder whether the Costco ball might essentially be the overseas equivalent of the Japanese E・R・C.

Back then, I became convinced that I had found basically the same kind of ball for about half the price.

Looking back now, however, I would be more careful with that conclusion. I can confirm that both were 3-piece Callaway balls, but I cannot confirm that Superhot 55 and the Japanese E・R・C were actually identical products.

Either way, the Costco price was still impressive.

    Looking Back from 2026

This article started with a golf-ball purchase back in 2018. Looking at it again in 2026 makes the price seem even more remarkable: ¥3,680 (about US$23) for two dozen Callaway 3-piece golf balls. Superhot 55 is now an older model, so this should be viewed as a look back at a great Costco find rather than a current buying recommendation.

The research was done. The numbers looked good. And I was pretty happy with what we had found at Costco.

There was only one thing left to do:

Take the Superhot 55 to the golf course and see how it actually performed.

That’s always the most important part of any golf-ball review.

  • Bridgestone TOUR B XS

    Gear Review
Wait… Yellow? My Amazon Prime Day Deal
Prime Day Find ★ July 2026 Golf Ball Review
Unboxing Bridgestone TOUR B XS golf balls from Amazon

The moment we opened the Amazon package.

    I have always been using white-golf-ball .
Yellow, orange, high-visibility colors — I’ve never really been interested. If I’m playing golf, I want a pure white ball.
Then my wife found a great deal during Amazon Prime Day and ordered a box of Bridgestone TOUR B XS balls for me.
There was just one small problem.
She forgot to check the color.

    Gear at a Glance

    Product Bridgestone TOUR B XS
    Category Golf Ball
Where We Bought It Amazon Japan — Prime Day
Regular Price About ¥7,000 (approx. US$44)
What We Paid About ¥4,300 (approx. US$27)
    Color Yellow — accidentally!
What Stands Out Soft feel and high greenside spin, designed for golfers who want additional spin and control on approach shots.
The Prime Day Deal Was Too Good to Ignore

The story started with Amazon Prime Day.

TOUR B XS balls normally cost around ¥7,000 (about US$44) in Japan, but my wife spotted them for only ¥4,300 (about US$27).

At that price, the decision was easy. She quickly hit the order button before the deal disappeared.

In all the excitement about the price, however, one detail escaped her attention.

    The color.

So, What Kind of Ball Is the TOUR B XS?

Before we get back to the color surprise, the TOUR B XS itself deserves some attention.

Bridgestone positions the XS as the TOUR B model for golfers looking for additional spin, a soft feel and more control around the green.

Its REACTIV technology is designed to help generate speed and distance on full shots while keeping the ball on the clubface longer on approach shots, producing more spin and control around the green.

The TOUR B X and TOUR B XS have slightly different personalities. The X puts more emphasis on distance, while the XS is the option for players who want more spin and a softer feel.

And, of course, choosing yellow instead of white doesn’t change any of that performance.

Same TOUR B XS performance. Just a color I never expected to play.
    Then We Opened the Box…

When the Amazon package arrived and we opened the box, there they were.

    Yellow golf balls.

For someone who has always insisted on playing white balls, this was a first.

Apparently, the Prime Day price had been so attractive that nobody stopped to check which color had actually been ordered.

I wasn’t quite sure what to think at first. But once I put the yellow ball next to my usual white one, I had to admit that the difference was interesting.

    White golf ball

    My usual white golf ball

Yellow Bridgestone TOUR B XS golf ball

    My first yellow golf ball

Well… maybe it’s time to give yellow a chance.

So for my next round, I’m going to put these yellow TOUR B XS balls into play.

I’m especially curious to see whether the brighter color makes the ball easier to follow in the air and easier to find on the course.

After years of playing nothing but white, this will be something new.

Maybe my wife accidentally made the right choice.

I’ll find out on the course.

  • TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe USA

    TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe USA

    Gear Review
TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe USA — A Golf Ball Made for the Fourth of July
USA Edition ★ July 2026 Golf Ball Review
I bought a new box of golf balls just before my next round: the TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe USA, featuring a bold red, white and blue stripe.

The timing could not have been better. I found them during an Independence Day sale on Amazon Japan on July 4. And with 2026 marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, the patriotic design immediately caught my attention.

A red, white and blue golf ball on the Fourth of July? I couldn’t resist.

    Gear at a Glance

Product TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe USA
    Category Golf Ball
Where We Bought It Amazon Japan
Why We Bought It Found during an Independence Day sale on July 4. The red, white and blue USA design was simply too perfect for the occasion.
What Stands Out 360° red, white and blue alignment stripe, soft feel and a 100% urethane cover.
First Impression: This Ball Stands Out

The first thing you notice is the stripe. A thick red, white and blue band wraps around the center of the ball, and it certainly isn’t subtle.

If you’re tired of golf balls that all look the same, this one has personality. The USA colors make it easy to spot, and the design feels especially appropriate for a summer round around the Fourth of July.

    The Stripe Isn’t Just Decoration
TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe USA golf ball

The stripe is not there just for looks. TaylorMade calls it 360° ClearPath Alignment. The band wraps around the center of the ball to provide a clear visual reference when lining up putts.

I found the wide stripe particularly easy to see at address. It gives you an obvious line to work with when setting the putter face, and the way the stripe rolls also gives you visual feedback after impact.

Underneath the patriotic design, this is a serious performance ball. Tour Response uses a three-piece construction and a 100% cast urethane cover, designed to provide a soft feel along with greenside spin and control.

A performance golf ball with a little more personality.
    Why I Bought It

This purchase was partly about performance — but I have to admit, the timing and design were just as important.

I came across the ball during an Independence Day sale on Amazon Japan. Since it was July 4, and 2026 marks 250 years since American independence, the USA-themed Tour Response Stripe felt like exactly the right golf ball to buy that day.

Sometimes golf gear doesn’t need a complicated reason. You see something that fits the moment, and you want to take it to the course.

Fourth of July cake and iced tea

To complete the Fourth of July mood, there was a stars-and-stripes cake and iced tea in a Budweiser mug.

Looking at them together with the new golf balls made me think of one thing: I’d love to take these balls to Hawaii someday.

The red, white and blue stripe would look pretty good against a Hawaiian blue sky.

So perhaps that’s the next goal — take a box of Tour Response Stripe USA balls to Hawaii and put them into play.

  • Kannami Springs Country Club/Glamping Available

    Kannami Springs Country Club/Glamping Available

If you live around Tokyo or Yokohama and are looking for a golf trip that feels a little more like a weekend getaway, Kannami Springs Country Club in Shizuoka is an interesting option.

This time, the three of us — my wife, our son and I — headed to Kannami for a family round. The course itself was challenging, the weekend green fee was surprisingly reasonable, and what really made this place stand out was what we found beyond the golf course: a hotel, glamping, a swimming pool and a large sauna.

    Quick Guide for International Golfers

    Location Kannami, Shizuoka Prefecture
Our Drive to the Course About 100 km from our home in Yokohama. Our actual drive took approximately 80 minutes.
Public Transportation / Shuttle Bus A reservation-based club shuttle is available. If you are travelling without a car, check the current schedule with the golf course before your visit.
How We Booked We booked directly with the golf course by phone.
What We Paid About ¥13,000 per person for a weekend round. Considering the course and resort facilities, we thought this was great value.
Rentals Golf club set: ¥3,300 / Individual club: ¥550 / Golf shoes: ¥1,100.
Dress Code Golf-appropriate clothing is required. Metal spikes are not permitted.
Tattoo / Bath Policy The resort has large public baths and sauna facilities. We recommend checking the current tattoo policy directly with the golf course before using these facilities.
Visitor Access / Membership Visitors can book the course. Reservations are available directly by phone or through the golf course website.

    World Cup Match

It happened to be the day of the World Cup Final. We left Yokohama early in the morning, listening to the match commentary on the car radio as we headed toward Kannami. It made the drive feel a little different from our usual golf trips — part of my attention was on the match, while the other part was already thinking about the round ahead.

    Kannami Springs Country Club

Elevation Changes Make the Course Tricky

Kannami Springs has plenty of elevation changes, and we found the course more challenging than it might first appear.

One hole that particularly stood out was the par-3 7th on the OUT course. It plays downhill from the tee, which makes judging the actual distance difficult. Choosing the right club required a little more thought than usual.

The hilly terrain also gives the course a very different atmosphere from many of the flatter courses closer to Tokyo.

Golf course at Kannami Springs Country Club

More Than Golf: You Can Even Go Glamping Here

This is where Kannami Springs becomes particularly interesting.

There is a full hotel at the golf course — and even a glamping facility.

Hotel Kannami has 77 guest rooms, so instead of driving home immediately after 18 holes, golfers can turn the visit into an overnight stay.

But what really caught our attention was the glamping accommodation beside the golf course. It is not something we often see at Japanese golf courses.

Glamping at Kannami Springs Country Club

Glamping beside the golf course at Kannami Springs

The glamping area offers views across the golf course and toward Mt. Fuji, and BBQ options are available. Only a limited number of groups can stay in the glamping area each day, which gives it a more private resort feel.

For couples, families or a group of golfing friends, this opens up a very different way to enjoy golf in Japan.

Play a round, relax in the sauna, have a BBQ and then spend the night in a glamping tent instead of immediately heading back toward Tokyo.

    Golf → Sauna → BBQ → Glamping

The resort also has an outdoor swimming pool, large public baths and a large sauna, giving the whole property much more of a resort atmosphere than a typical day-trip golf course.

    Lunch with the Family

This round was also special because the three of us played together as a family — my wife, our son and I.

Lunch portions were generous. I chose tonkatsu, while my son ordered beef stew. His looked so good that I almost regretted my own choice.

My wife went for hiyashi chuka, a chilled noodle dish that is especially popular during the Japanese summer. Unfortunately, we forgot to take a photo of hers.

Lunch at Kannami Springs Country Club

    Would We Come Back?

    Definitely.

Kannami Springs combines a challenging golf course with something we do not often see in Japan: a genuine golf-and-stay resort experience.

For around ¥13,000 for our weekend round, we enjoyed the golf itself, but the hotel, glamping, pool and sauna make this course particularly interesting for anyone looking to turn a round of golf into a short getaway from the Tokyo or Yokohama area.

Next time, staying overnight — especially trying the glamping — might be part of the plan.

  • Chiba Yomiuri Country Club/Good Value

    Chiba Yomiuri Country Club/Good Value

If you live around Tokyo or Yokohama and are looking for an affordable golf course in Chiba, Chiba Yomiuri Country Club is one worth knowing about.

We have played here many times — this was our 21st round at the course. Our previous visit was on July 5, 2025, so this was our first round here in about a year.

One reason we keep coming back is the overall balance. The course is reasonably accessible from Yokohama by car, the price is attractive, and we have generally found it easier to get a tee time than at many other golf courses around the Tokyo metropolitan area.

    Quick Guide for International Golfers

    Location Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture
Our Drive to the Course We left our home in Yokohama at around 5:00 a.m. on Sunday and arrived in approximately 70 minutes. The drive was about 100 km. Saturday traffic is generally heavier, so allow extra time.
Public Transportation / Shuttle Bus Free transportation is available by advance reservation from Kazusa-Ushiku Station on the Kominato Railway and Ichihara-Tsurumai Bus Terminal. The former shuttle service from Goi Station has ended.
How We Booked A friend called the golf course directly and made our reservation. We have found this course relatively easy to book. It is not commonly seen on some of Japan’s major golf booking platforms.
What We Paid About ¥15,000 per person for this round. Considering the location, course condition and overall experience, we felt it offered very good value.
Rentals We could not confirm current club and shoe rental details from the official website. Check directly with the golf course before visiting if you need rental equipment.
Dress Code Avoid arriving in jeans, T-shirts, sweatwear or sandals. Golf-appropriate clothing is recommended.
Tattoo / Bath Policy We could not confirm an official tattoo policy online. If you have tattoos and plan to use the bathing facilities, check directly with the golf course before your visit.
Visitor Access / Membership Visitors can book the course. General guests are accepted from two players, subject to availability. The club also offers membership and registration programs.
    Watermelon Day in Chiba

We played on July 27, which happens to be known as “Watermelon Day” in Japan. Chiba is one of Japan’s major watermelon-producing areas, so watermelon might be a fitting treat after a summer round.

For us, though, the bigger story was simply being back at one of the courses we have played more than almost anywhere else.

    A Surprisingly Cool Early-Morning Start

First hole at Chiba Yomiuri Country Club

Japan can be extremely hot and humid in July. The previous day, temperatures in Yokohama had reached around 38°C.

But when we arrived at the golf course at around 6:00 a.m., it was only about 24°C. The early start made a huge difference, and the first part of the round was surprisingly cool and comfortable.

If you are planning to play golf in Japan during midsummer, an early tee time is definitely worth considering.

A Famous Tokyo Yomiuri Hole Recreated in Chiba

Sign explaining the recreated Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club 18th hole

One of the most interesting features of Chiba Yomiuri is its 18th hole, which recreates the famous finishing hole at Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club.

It gives golfers a taste of one of the best-known holes from the prestigious Tokyo course without having to play there.

Another unusual feature is that five-player groups are allowed. We played as a group of four this time, but we have played here with five people before. The course provides five-person golf carts for these groups.

    A Relaxed Clubhouse

Clubhouse seating area at Chiba Yomiuri Country Club

One thing that always stands out is how spacious the clubhouse feels.

The restaurant tables are noticeably larger than those at many golf courses we visit, and the large windows look out onto the surrounding greenery. It is a comfortable place to relax before or after the round.

Good Value — and Something of a Hidden Gem

Scratch card received after playing at Chiba Yomiuri Country Club

For golfers living around Tokyo and Yokohama, Chiba Yomiuri feels a little like a hidden gem.

We paid about ¥15,000 for this round. Taking the location, course condition and overall experience into account, we thought that was very reasonable.

We booked directly by phone through a friend. In our experience, tee times here can be easier to secure than at many popular courses that receive heavy traffic from the major Japanese golf booking sites.

There is also a fun scratch-card system. Depending on what happens during your round, you may receive a discount toward a future visit. It is a small touch, but one that makes returning to the course a little more fun.

    Would We Play Here Again?

Absolutely. After 21 rounds here, Chiba Yomiuri Country Club has become one of our regular courses.

For international golfers living in the Kanto area — particularly those who have access to a car — it is worth considering if you are looking for a reasonably priced course in Chiba that is relatively straightforward to book.

And if you are playing during the Japanese summer, our experience this time reinforced one important lesson: start early.

Hello, this is Golf-Otto. On August 2, 2026, our family returned to Olympic National Golf Club Sakawa Course in Kanagawa Prefecture for the first time in quite a while.

After a long period of renovation, a warm and inviting wooden refreshment hut now stands on the course. Along with stone lanterns, possible views of Mount Fuji, and the OUT course’s unusual hole configuration, we found plenty to remember beyond the golf itself.

    • About 4°C cooler
      than the city
    • A new hut built with
      trees from the course
    • Three par 3s, 4s and 5s
      on the distinctive OUT

25°C at 7 a.m. and Nearly 30°C by Noon—Still About 4°C Cooler Than the City

At around 7 a.m., the temperature at Sakawa Course was 25°C (77°F). The morning felt relatively comfortable, although it climbed to nearly 30°C (86°F) by midday. Even then, it was about 4°C (7°F) cooler than the city—a welcome difference during a midsummer round.

There was not much wind that day, so it still felt quite hot in direct sunlight. Do not let the cooler location create a false sense of security: bring plenty of water, wear a hat, and use sun protection just as you would at a lower-elevation course.

A Warm Wooden Refreshment Hut on Our Return Visit

Exterior of the new wooden refreshment hut at Sakawa Course
The open wooden building blends naturally with the surrounding turf and trees

Sakawa Course had been undergoing major renovations for quite some time. On this return visit, one of the biggest surprises was the newly completed refreshment hut.

The generous use of timber gives the building a warm yet uncluttered appearance. Its red roof contrasts beautifully with the green turf, while the structure itself fits naturally into the landscape.

The building was complete, but it had not yet opened when we visited, and drinks were not being sold. We look forward to the day it begins operating as a comfortable place to pause during a round.

From Course Trees to a Building: The Story Behind the Sustainable Hut

Sustainable Design information panel displayed at the refreshment hut
A panel explaining how trees from the course were reused in the building

What makes the hut even more appealing is the idea behind its construction. According to the on-site “Sustainable Design” panel, it was built using trees managed and felled on the course itself.

The timber was milled and processed into lumber, glued laminated timber, and cross-laminated timber (CLT), then used for the structure as well as interior and exterior finishes. Instead of discarding trees grown on the property, the project gave them a new role in the course’s facilities.

This was more than a simple replacement building—it was a thoughtful way to keep local resources in circulation. Although the hut had not yet opened, learning the story behind its timber made us look forward to its opening even more.

Golf-Otto’s highlight: The appeal lies not only in the hut’s design, but also in imagining that its wood may once have stood somewhere on the course. When you visit, take a look at both the building and its information panel.

Stone Lanterns and Mount Fuji: Scenery Rich in Japanese Character

Stone lanterns and the mountain view in the direction of Mount Fuji at Sakawa Course
Stone lanterns add a Japanese touch; clouds hid Mount Fuji on this visit

As you make your way around the course, stone-lantern-style features appear at key locations. Set quietly among the turf, trees, and mountains, they lend the entire course a calm Japanese atmosphere.

When the weather cooperates, Mount Fuji can also be seen from several points around the course. A stone lantern standing against the green landscape with Mount Fuji beyond it creates a distinctly Japanese scene—and one of Sakawa Course’s special attractions.

Unfortunately, clouds hid Mount Fuji during this visit. Even so, the open view toward the mountains was impressive. Seeing the lanterns and Mount Fuji together on a clear day is something we can look forward to next time.

Three Par 3s, Three Par 4s and Three Par 5s on the OUT Course

One of the most interesting playing features is the composition of the OUT course. A typical nine often has two par 3s, five par 4s, and two par 5s. Sakawa’s OUT, however, has an unusual three par 3s, three par 4s, and three par 5s—a distinctive “3-3-3” layout.

Hole Type Typical Nine-Hole Example Sakawa OUT
    Par 32 holes3 holes
    Par 45 holes3 holes
    Par 52 holes3 holes
A varied hole on the OUT course at Sakawa Course
A distinctive OUT that balances short, middle-length and long holes

Par 3s change the sense of distance and target, par 4s invite careful planning, and par 5s require a series of decisions over a longer hole. Having the same number of each means the mood and strategy keep changing throughout the nine.

You find yourself wondering how to approach the next hole, which makes the variety especially enjoyable. For golfers who appreciate the character of individual holes rather than focusing only on the score, this OUT course should leave a lasting impression.

What We Enjoyed About Sakawa Course

Returning to Sakawa Course after some time away, we found that it had gained new appeal while preserving its natural setting and calm atmosphere.

The summer climate was cooler than the city, the new hut made creative use of timber from the course, stone lanterns brought Japanese character to the landscape, and Mount Fuji remained something to hope for on a clear day. Add the OUT course’s three par 3s, three par 4s, and three par 5s, and these elements come together to create Sakawa’s distinctive personality.

For golfers in their fifties and beyond, a round can be about more than simply moving quickly from one shot to the next. It is also worth taking time to appreciate the scenery, facilities, and course design. In summer, prepare carefully for the heat, then enjoy the landscape and look out for the refreshment hut as it moves toward opening.

Please note: This article is based on our round on August 2, 2026. Temperatures, course conditions, and facility operations may change. Check the golf club’s official information for the latest details before booking or visiting.

    A final thought from Golf-Otto

We did not see Mount Fuji this time, but that gives us another reason to return on a clear day. On our next visit, we hope to take on Sakawa’s distinctive OUT course again while enjoying the view of Mount Fuji and the new wooden refreshment hut at a more leisurely pace.

    ↑ Amazon
